A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
