An Unprecedented Leader

The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
