"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're not alone. Several famous fans have openly coveted the position.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos often depict them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to make music."

"Therefore all are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Award Nod

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words detail endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international audience.

But Haim will consistently be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
