This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a intense meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
